About bamboo in Switzerland
Why SBS?
Switzerland has a growing body of expertise and research in bamboo, including at its leading academic and research institutions. Yet there is no dedicated platform bringing together the diverse community of people and organisations working with, researching or interested in bamboo. SBS exists to fill that gap.
Why bamboo?
Bamboo is gaining worldwide importance as a highly sustainable and remarkably versatile natural resource. It is used in construction, food, textiles, agriculture and carbon fibre, as well as in a vast range of traditional and modern products, from furniture and bicycles to baskets and musical instruments.
Its exceptional growth rate, ability to sequester carbon and potential to restore depleted soils make bamboo a powerful resource in the fight against climate change. Bamboo can help reduce our dependence on fossil-based materials, support the transition to a circular economy and provide renewable alternatives across a growing range of applications. SBS believes that bamboo has the potential to become a key resource in the transition towards a more sustainable, circular and resilient future.
